2009 News Update

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT TO THE AGM – 26th NOVEMBER 2009

The 2009 season was my second year as Chairman of Hutton Cricket Club and I would like to first of all thank everyone for their support. In particular, my thanks go to President Ron on whom I relied immensely. The Club is very fortunate to have such a committed and hard-working President.

The year began really well with Nick Watson and his band of Over-40’s winning the Indoor League Competition at Chelmsford. Congratulations on bringing in the Cup once again.

The season began with great optimism but availability issues disrupted everyone’s plans to a significantly. Members must address this issue if the Club is to meet its objectives. Sadly however, the Club Captain faced some very difficult personal issues and had to step down with the season barely underway. Chris McNally stepped into the breach and did an immense job despite numerous setbacks. His perseverance, skill and substantial personal attributes melded a team that did itself proud by the end of the season. There were many memorable performances and the Captains pay tribute to them in their reports.

Our Captains have done us proud this year – congratulations and thank you.

We ended the season with the First and Second XI’s secure in their First Divisions and the Fourth XI holding their own in the Premiership. Sadly the Third XI did not achieve promotion despite the herculean efforts of the Captain but they had a season of which they can be proud. The Fifth XI continued in their own way and contributed significantly to bringing on our young players.

There was a ‘blot on the landscape’ – the Club won the Fair Play Award last year and was rightly proud of the achievement. This year the Club was rated at 30! This is of course absolutely unacceptable and was caused by a minority of players. This Club supports the ‘Spirit of Cricket’ in word and deed so such behaviour will be the subject of Club Disciplinary Proceedings if there is a recurrence.

Despite the fact that we seemed to standstill, it is still a far cry from 1998 when all four League XIs were in the lowest divisions of the League. We have a core of players who can see us into the higher echelons of the league if they choose to stick together. It won’t happen overnight but I am confident that we can and will achieve our ambitions by working as a team, using our individual skills and enjoying our cricket.

As I said, the Club has appeared to mark time this year but, I believe we have the people to take us forward.

I would like to acknowledge the excellent work of our groundsman, Lawrence Edwards and Robin Hobbs, our Ground Manager. Recently Lawrence met with the Captains and they have agreed on the work programme for the squares for 2010. May I also thank, on the players’ behalf, our umpires, scorers, tea ladies and bar staff. Indeed, we have many people who give their valuable time to the Club and I thank everyone in whatever capacity for their hardwork and commitment to the Club.

Thanks also to all those who helped with the Colts and congratulations to those who qualified as coaches this year. Our Colts set-up ( now to be known as the Youth Section ) is the envy of many Clubs and probably one the best in the County and I wish to thank Ian Patterson for his enormous enthusiasm and management skills taking us further on the road to success. Ian is standing down this year due to business pressures but we have a replacement in Darren Tredgett who will bring his enthusiasm and leadership skills to the team and take us forward.

Thank you also to the Committee for their dedication and hard work and without whom, we would not have a Club that enables us all to enjoy our cricket. May I at this point, say a very big thank you to Steve Vanner who has staunchly supported everything despite some very difficult family issues over the last year. The greatest pleasure is seeing our players competing and enjoying their cricket. The social events this year have been the ‘icing on the cake’ – thank you Lorraine for invigorating our social calendar.

The Hon Treasurer will report separately on the Club’s finances. However I would like to record my thanks to James Turnbull for taking on a demanding role as well as playing. It has not been easy for James due to work reasons. James is standing down but the Turnbull family is continuing the good work and Jeremy will take over the role. You can be assured that the Committee will be doing all it can to develop our income streams, control our costs and thus ensure that we have a viable financial model for the future. I am personally delighted to have been able to recruit such an able and enthusiastic person to the Committee. On the financial front, thanks go to Robin Hobbs and his team for raising funds from the quiz and the painting sales and Lorraine for her work in raising funds from social events. All these efforts enable the Club to keep subscriptions and match fees at a reasonable level.

I would like to talk about the future. The playing strength of the Club on paper should give us all hope for a success but availability of players needs to be addressed for us to fulfil our potential. Everyone should support the Captains at all times despite the vagaries of selection. The Captain’s job is made even more difficult by unavailability and often at very short notice so more often than not well-laid plans are disrupted. The balance of teams is affected to the detriment of individuals aspirations and the team ethic. If you have a problem, please talk to your Captain or Mike Boyers.

Talking of Mike, he has been a major catalyst in the development of our players and teams. His experience, skill and know-how has been invaluable and this year, Mike’s role is being formalised by making him Cricket Manager. He will be ably assisted by Robin Hobbs and Michael O’Dell with a brief to talk with Captains, Coaches and players so that talent is recognised and nurtured. The continuing development of young players beyond the age of sixteen is a key task for Mike and his team and they will continue with the Sunday Development XI which will see Nickie Vanner as Captain. This is an exciting development and it has been created to see how young players adapt to playing with and against highly skilled adult players. This is complementary to ‘age-group’ cricket which enables young people to measure themselves against their peers whereas the Development XI will enable them to measure themselves in a higher level of competition.

The Club has secured sponsorship from Deutsche Bank for two years and an option for a third year. This is a major development and thanks go to Ian Patterson for his work in making this happen. The cash will not be wasted and will go toward improvements to the Club. The sponsorship will enable us to produce a whole range of new kit which will be available for purchase by the end of March.

Last year, I remarked that there were a couple of Committee jobs that needed filling. I am pleased to report that Jane Patterson has agreed to become House Manager and Ian Patterson will take on the task of Membership Secretary and Merchandising Manager. I want to record my thanks to Carol Watson who is standing down as Membership Secretary after a number of years battling to get members to keep our records up to date.

I am sure that if we continue to work together our Club will go from strength to strength and we will all gain even more enjoyment from our cricket and the social life that goes with it. In conclusion, my personal thanks go to everyone for your part in the life of the Club and I am sure that together we will take Hutton Cricket Club forward.

Hon Chairman

Hutton CC 1st Team Report 2009

If you had to describe the 1st Team’s season in one word, “nailbiting”, would not be wrong.

After a turbulent time pre-season, with the Captaincy changing hands, and the probability that our main off spinner wouldn’t be able to play in our already depleted side, we started off the campaign with more than a little trepidation. Seventeen points in the first three games set the stage and as we at the time thought, the difficult fight against relegation.

Dave Hammond’s return to Hutton CC four games into the season, after a year in the Kent Premier League, was an unexpected bonus. His skill with the bat (top scoring with 461 runs for the season) most certainly helped keep our place in the 1st division for next year. Notable performances by Dave Morgan with the gloves and bat, Andy McGarry and Danny Cocklin with the ball were enough keep us within touching distance of eighth spot. This too, however, still left us in the relegation zone after the first half the season.

We started off the second half of the season much the same as the first half, poorly! With the start of the University holidays our team was strengthened by the return of our student players, all bringing with them enthusiasm for the game but special mention must go to Joey Buttleman with his “never say die” attitude and cricketing skill rallying our ailing team. The team went from strength to strength, winning four of the last six games, which turned the team’s position from relegation ninth place to a very creditable fifth place at the close of the season.

Notable highlights of the season:-
Dave Morgan’s 118 vs Westcliff on Sea CC
Andy McGarry’s 6/36 vs Basildon & Pitsea CC
Joey Buttleman’s 7/56 and 53 n/o vs Wickford CC
Anthony Hill’s 5/33 vs Basildon and Pitsea CC
Dave Hammond’s 108 vs Orsett CC
Joey Buttleman’s 108 vs Orsett CC
Danny Cocklin’s 4/14 vs Basildon and Pitsea CC

It would be amiss if I did not mention the younger generation of players who did outstandingly well during the season. Tom Patterson, Anthony Hill, Huw O’Dell, Jason Paterson and Jamie Vanner are a credit to Hutton CC and will be a very important part of the 1st team in the future.

All the members of the 1st team should be proud of their achievements during 2009. Not only did we survive relegation we actually finished a place higher than the 2008 season, well done!

Finally, I would like to thank the Committee for all their hard work they have put in throughout the year to keep Hutton CC a great cricket club and social venue, Mike Boyers for his guidance and knowledge as Coach, Chris Boyers for scoring the vast majority of our matches, the tea ladies for serving up great food during the season and last but not least Robin Hobbs, Brian Wiggett et al for their support home and away from the sidelines during our tough 2009 season.

Thank you!

Chris McNally
